Gay Pride in St. Petersburg
The St. Petersburg LGBT community addressed in spring 2006 to the city government with a request for a place on the Nevsky Prospekt (the main avenue of St. Petersburg) to carry on a gay pride during the 303rd anniversary city festival on May 27. This was the precise date of the antisodomy law abrogation 13 years ago. The consent was received immediatly and thousands of spectators greeted the gay pride on a little square in front of the catholic temple of St. Catherine (Nevsky, 32) with enthusiasm. This event was in deep contrast with Moscow scandals and provocations during the unsuccessful attempt to organize the gay pride there that very day as well.
